Stilbaai Tourism Office and Museum
The Stilbaai Museum and Information office for the area is situated in the historic De Jager farmstead, built back in 1840. The museum displays many photos from the early days of this holiday town, up to the recent past. The best feature of the museum is the excellent exhibition on the Blombos Cave, the early inhabitants of this area, dating back as far as 96 000 years, and many artefacts excavated in the cave.
Next to the De Jager farmstead is a pond, fed by a natural fountain, in which indigenous fresh-water eels have been living for generations. The eels are fed daily at 11:00 and the public can view this interesting spectacle.
There is also a coffee shop at the museum with a nice garden atmosphere. For more information, phone 028 754 2602 or mail firstname.lastname@example.org
The Ancient Fish Traps
The ancient fish traps at the Skulpiesbaai Nature Reserve near Stilbaai, is a fascinating place to visit. To see it properly, be sure to go there at low tide. It is a declared National Heritage Site.
The stone walls in the intertidal zone was built by the indigenous Khoisan of the Southern Cape coast. They used these enclosures as tidal fish traps. These people lived along the coast for many thousands of years. It seems that the traps were built from 3000 to 2000 years ago, as the sea level before then was lower than the present.
When the first white people arrived in the area in the late 1700’s, the Khoisan people were still working the fish traps. The new settlers quickly adopted their ingeneous techniques. Over the years the adopted owners of the fish traps maintained, rebuilt and added to the Khoisan walls.
A dedicated group of Stilbaai residents still maintain the tradition of fish trapping. However, due to over-fishing along the entire South African coast in the past decades, not many fish are caught in the traps today.
Lappiesbaai and Goukou River
Lappiesbaai is the long sandy beach to the east of the Goukou River mouth. It is a safe Blue Flag beach and very popular in summertime, when holiday-makers and their kids turn the beach into the most colourful, buzzing area in Stilbaai. The area around the river mouth is very popular with parasailers in the summer months, when the easterly winds give them the thrills they seek.
The Goukou River is always open to the sea, making it a tidal river. It is navigable for 13 km upstream! Many water activities can be enjoyed, from tube floating, SUP, canoeing, windsurfing and sailing, to rowboat, motorboat and waterski (in a limited area). It is also very popular for fishing. There is a jetty and two slipways for boat launching.
